Volunteer

Keeping Castle Loch in pristine condition and safe for all of its visitors and users, plus running all the various events takes a lot of effort on the part of many people. This relies on the generosity and hard work of many volunteers. If you would like to know more, please do not hesitate to make contact or pop along to one of the sessions detailed below. We will never ask people to undertake activities that they are not comfortable with and at the start of each activity we will have a short safety briefing and ask all helpers to sign in and out. When a volunteer joins us for the first time, there is a little bit of paperwork to complete, but nothing too arduous. If you have any doubts about your physical capabilities, please do first consult your doctor for advice.

In The Dry

Many people think that all volunteering for an environmental organisation is about being outside, physical effort and getting dirty. This isn’t so, and there is always something that needs planning, sorting or arranging. This is just a short list of some of those things – event planning, helping out at events, spring cleaning Lochfield cottage, storytelling and painting at children’s events, fundraising, making and putting up posters, giving talks… If you have any ideas of things you can help with, please do let us know. Or if you are interested in any of the above and would like to know, pop by and have a chat with John, our Interim Chairman, at Lochfield Cottage.

Getting Your Hands Dirty

This could be everything from a few hours litter picking or cutting back brambles, through to a spot of digging or chainsaw work moving fallen trees (if you have the experience). This type of activity will start in earnest mid-July with the clearance of the route for the new path, which will by then have three months of new bramble growth, before the contractor can get in to construct the path. The habitat management work tends to then happen during the autumn and winter months. As a ‘rule of thumb’ we run a monthly weekend group on the 1st Saturday and a monthly week-day group on the 3rd Thursday. We usually meet at Lochfield Cottage, by the car park on the A709, and run between 10am – 1pm.
